How do I connect to a CAEN Windows computer remotely?

Connect Over the Web from Anywhere

Note: Since there is currently no mechanism for determining whether a connection via the web is from on-campus vs off-campus, Duo two-factor authentication (2FA) is required, and software that is licensed only for the On Campus connections will not be available.

To connect to CAEN's Windows Remote Desktop Service using a web browser, simply go to:

https://2fa.midesktop.it.umich.edu/

You will then be prompted to log in with your U-M uniqname and UMICH password:

After clicking the Login button, you will be presented with a numbered list of your devices/options for obtaining a Duo code:

Enter the number of your preferred option. Otherwise, if you already have a code from a previous Duo SMS message or Hardware Token, you can enter that code directly. Click the Continue button to authenticate. You will then be presented with a window showing your available connection options:

Select the CAEN Labs 2017 connection to access the latest version of the CAEN Lab Software Environment (CLSE). Once connected, you will be logged onto the remote computer automatically within your web browser window, and presented with the CLSE for Windows desktop.

On Campus - Connect Using the VMware Horizon View Client

Download and install the VMware Horizon View Client:

It is suggested to follow the ITS Installing VMware View Client instructions to install the client and connect. Two main items to note:

  1. When you first start the client, you will be asked to enter a Connection Server. Make sure to set it to midesktop.umich.edu:

  1. When prompted to log in with your U-M uniqname and UMICH password, make sure the Domain field is set to UMROOT:

After logging in, you will be presented with a window similar to the one pictured below. Select the CAEN Labs 2017 On Campus connection by double-clicking its related icon:

Once connected, you will be logged onto the remote computer automatically, and will be presented with the CLSE for Windows desktop.

Off Campus - Connect Using VMware with Duo Two-Factor Authentication

Off-campus access to the CAEN Windows Remote Desktop Service requires the use of Duo two-factor authentication (2FA). All that is needed is to enroll a device. Once your device is enrolled in Duo, use the instructions above for On Campus connections to download and install the VMware Horizon View Client. Once you are done, quit and restart the client. You should see a window showing the available connection servers, which may only show the initial server you set up above:

Click the + New Server button in the top-left corner. You will be prompted to enter the name of a new Connection Server. Make sure to set it to 2fa.midesktop.it.umich.edu, and click the Connect button:

When prompted, enter your U-M uniqname as the User name, and your UMICH password in the Passcode field, then click the Login button:

You will next be presented with a numbered list of your options for obtaining your Duo code:

Enter the number of your preferred option in the Next Code field. Otherwise, if you already have a code from a previous Duo SMS message or Hardware Token, you can enter that code directly. Click the Login button to authenticate.

After authenticating with Duo, you will be presented with a window similar to the one pictured below. Select the CAEN Labs 2017 connection by double-clicking its related icon:
